Malcolm Hoenlein Biography

Malcolm Hoenlein was chosen Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations in June 1986, the coordinating body for 52 national Jewish organizations on international and national issues. He was formerly the founding Executive Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater New York, which serves as the major coordinating body for Jewish groups in the New York metropolitan region. He was the founder and Executive Director of the Greater New York Conference on Soviet Jewry before that. Malcolm Hoenlein earned his B.A. in Political Science from Temple University and went on to the University of Pennsylvania's Department of International Relations for his master's degree and doctorate studies. Mr. Hoenlein taught International Relations in the Political Science Department and worked as a Middle East specialist at the Foreign Policy Research Institute as a National Defense Fellow at the Universities Near East Center. He was also a member of the ORBIS, the Journal of International Affairs, editorial board. Mr. Hoenlein has met with international leaders as well as Jewish groups all around the world. He has written and spoken about international relations, Israel and Middle East issues, Soviet and World Jewry, terrorism, the American Jewish community, and intergroup relations both in the United States and overseas. Mr. Hoenlein is regularly contacted on public policy problems and acts as an advisor to a number of public leaders. He is frequently featured in the media. Mr. Hoenlein has received several honors and tributes. Yeshiva University awarded him a Doctorate of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) and Touro College awarded him a Doctorate of Laws (Honoris Causa). State of Israel Bonds honored him for his valiant and extraordinary service to Israel and the Jewish people, President Ronald Reagan presented him with the Private Sector Initiative Award, American ORT honored him with a special Man of the Millennium Tribute, the first Quitman Award for Jewish Professional Excellence, the Defender of Jerusalem Award, and Millender Fellow at Brandeis University. Mr. Hoenlein was instrumental in the planning of Washington, DC's huge National Solidarity Rally for Israel. In 2007, the Mayor of Jerusalem announced that Mr. Hoenlein had been awarded the city's highest honor, the Neeman Yerushalayim (Trustee of Jerusalem) award, by the City Council. Mr. Hoenlein has served as a representative for the United States to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), most recently in June 2007. He also served on the Ethical Standards Board of New York State. Mr. Hoenlein is a member of a number of communal, educational, and civic organizations, including the Council on Foreign Relations, and serves on their boards. He is the Chairman of America's Voices in Israel and the Secure Community Network's Co-Chair. Several firms have appointed him to their Boards of Directors or Advisory Boards.
