About Makoto Fujimura

Makoto Fujimura Biography

Makoto Fujimura is a cultural shaper who works as an artist, writer, and speaker around the world. From 2003 until 2009, Fujimura was a Presidential appointment to the National Council on the Arts, where he worked as an international arts champion, interacting with decision makers and supporting governmental policies on the arts. Dillon Gallery in New York, Sato Museum in Tokyo, The Contemporary Museum of Tokyo, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts Museum, Bentley Gallery in Arizona, Gallery Exit and Oxford House at Taikoo Place in Hong Kong, and Vienna's Belvedere Museum have all shown Fujimura's work. As part of an ongoing collaboration with composer and drummer Susie Ibarra, he was one of the first artists to paint live on stage in New York City's iconic Carnegie Hall. He has spoken at a variety of conferences, institutions, and museums, including the Aspen Institute, Yale and Princeton Universities, the Sato Museum, and the Phoenix Art Museum. Dr. Elaine Scarry, Dennis Donoghue, Billy Collins, Dana Gioia, Calvin DeWitt, and Miroslav Volf are among the cultural catalysts who have spoken at Fujimura's Encounter conferences, which he created in 1992. Refractions: A Journey of Faith, Art, and Culture, Fujimura's second book, is a collection of articles that brings individuals from all walks of life together in a conversation and meditation on culture, art, and humanity. Crossway Publishing commissioned and released The Four Holy Gospels, including Fujimura's sacred text illuminations, to commemorate the King James Bible's 400th anniversary. The Fujimura Institute was founded in 2011, and the Four Qu4rtets, a collaboration between Fujimura, painter Bruce Herman, Duke theologian/pianist Jeremy Begbie, and Yale composer Christopher Theofanidis, was premiered in 2012. The show will travel to universities such as Baylor, Duke, and Yale, as well as Gordon College and other institutes throughout the world.
