Maggie Kline Biography

Maggie Kline, M.S. LMFT, SEP has been a private practice marital, family, and child therapist for over 30 years. Her first two jobs were as a teacher and a counselor at Long Beach Unified School District in California, a big, ethnically diverse public school district. Maggie went on to work as a school psychologist, where she worked with children, parents, and student support teams from pre-kindergarten through high school. In 1986, she earned her marital, child, and family therapist license and started her own practice. Maggie sought information outside of the box to aid school-aged children, their instructors, and their parents after being dissatisfied with her University Counseling Psychology degree owing to a lack of trauma therapy courses in that decade. Dr. Peter A. Levine, the founder of Somatic Experiencing, a physiologically-based trauma prevention and treatment approach based on the most up-to-date neurobiology, was thankfully discovered and studied with her. Maggie quickly established a reputation as a trauma expert, combining S.E. with art, dance, play, dream work, and social engagement activities. Maggie is currently a Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute worldwide instructor (www.traumahealing.org). She also developed "Trauma Through a Child's Eyes PlayShops" for professionals who work with children, parents, and schools in 35 locations across five continents. Maggie led the first team of volunteers to utilize SE in Thailand following the Southeast Asian Tsunami, and after the Norwegian murders in 2011, she organized an emotional first aid course for teachers and parents. She speaks at conferences on play therapy and trauma throughout the United States and Europe. Maggie received a grant from Communities In Schools (CIS), a nationwide program that helps traumatized kids achieve, to educate social workers in Austin, Texas. She is the co-author of three books with Dr. Peter Levine: It Won't Hurt Forever—Guiding Your Child Through Trauma (Mothering Magazine, Jan-Feb 2002), Trauma Through a Child's Eyes—Awakening the Ordinary Miracle of Healing (North Atlantic, Berkeley, 2007), and Trauma Proofing Your Kids—A Parents' Guide to Instilling Confidence, Joy, and Resilience (March 2008). Maggie also performed a series of 15 video interviews created by www.kidsinthehouse.com and made available to parents for free to assist children to cope with trauma and loss. Her mission is to provide teachers and parents with the tools they need to avoid and treat the signs of trauma, overwhelm, and chronic stress. HeARTwork, Bringing Kids to Their Senses" is her latest effort for North Atlantic Books, and it is a vital manual for educators who want to teach traumatized children to become aware, embodied, focused, compassionate, and successful.
