Luke Russert Biography
With a double major in History and Communications, Luke Russert graduated from Boston College and joined NBC News in August 2008 and became a correspondent based in Washington, D.C. From Capitol Hill, Russert currently reports on the House of Representatives for NBCNews.com., Today, NBC Nightly News and MSNBC. Reporting from both the Democratic and Republican National conventions, Russert was on ground to cover the 2008 Presidential election. His Election Day reporting on the impact of young people on Barack Obama’s victory added to NBC’s News & Documentary Emmy award as part of the 2008 Election Night coverage. Russert has covered Congress with a focus on the House of Representatives since May of 2009. He has also covered other political issues including the Fiscal Cliff fight of 2012, the Republican resurgence of 2010, the passage of the Affordable Care Act and the debt limit crisis of 2011. After the congressman rebuked Russert for his aggressive questioning over an ethics report that determined Rangel had failed to disclose improper real estate holdings and had illegally solicited donations using official Congressional stationary; Russert received a public apology from the then House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Representative Charlie Rangel (D-NY) in 2010. The first journalist granted a sit down interview with Representative Anthony Weiner (D-NY) in 2011, after reports surfaced that the congressman sent inappropriate pictures over the internet to young women was Russert. Weiner told Russert he “couldn’t say with certitude” if the pictures were in fact of him. Weiner resigned from Congress shortly after the interview. Russert has worked as a guest host since late 2011 on various MSNBC programs such as The Cycle, Andrea Mitchell Reports, Way Too Early, Todd, The Daily Rundown with Chuck and NOW with Alex Wagner. Russert writes on a blog called First Read. It is first source for important political news and analysis from the NBC News Political Unit. Not limited to political reporting, Russert has also reported and covered the earthquake that hit the East Coast in August in 2011, the Boston bombings, Hurricanes Irene, Ike and Gustav. On NBC’s New Years Eve Special with Carson Daly, he was a street correspondent and recorded various interviews with celebrities like Ted Nugent, Usher and Jessica Alba. For Dateline, Russert reported a possible wrongful conviction of Jon-Adrian Velazquez at New York’s infamous Sing-Sing Prison in 2012 and this report was nominated for a 2013 “News and Documentary Emmy” award. Russert was a cohost with political pundit James Carville on Sirius-XM Satellite Radio for a critically acclaimed sports radio talk show called 60/20 Sports from March 2006 to 2010. He interviewed the likes of Bill Russell, Cal Ripken Jr., Lance Armstrong, former President Clinton and former President George Bush on 60/20 Sports. Russert received an honorary degree from Wingate University in North Carolina. An award meant to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to public discourse in the spirit of a healthy democracy known as the Marlin Fitzwater award for Leadership in Public Communication,” was awarded to Russert in May of 2009 from Franklin Pierce University. Russert is the son to Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth and late Tim Russert. He lives with his pug Chamberlain in Washington, D.C.
