Luis Valdez is a Council Member for the National Endowment for the Arts & Founder and Artistic Director of El Teatro Campesino. El Teatro Comepsino was founded during the Great Delano Grape Strike of 1965 this troupe has performed throughout the United States Mexico and Europe to critical acclaim.
Through his efforts Chicano culture has been recognized as a vital component of the American experience. Mr. Valdez' first major critical and popular success the play Zoot Suit was originally conceived for the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and funded through a 1977 Rockefeller Foundation Artist-in-Residence grant. It subsequently became the first play by a Chicano produced on Broadway.
