Lucy Lippard Biography

Lucy Lippard, art critic, writer, curator, and activist, has shaped—and simultaneously deconstructed—what we identify as “art” for more than 50 years. Lippard eventually abandoned traditional art criticism after becoming a reviewer for Artforum in 1964, citing the necessity for "so-called impartiality" and a lack of touch with artists and their work as reasons. She went on to become a significant player in the field of Minimal and Conceptual art, as well as a commentator on it. Six Years: The Dematerialization of the Art Object (1973) was cataloging and description of Conceptual art activities in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is now generally regarded as an essential period reference work and a mainstay of contemporary art syllabi in classrooms all around the world. Lippard has written more than 20 volumes on feminism, art, politics, and location since 1966, in addition to Six Years and an outstanding collection of articles. Lippard has assisted in the formation of artist groups such as the Heresies Collective (a group of feminist artists who published the journal Heresies: A Feminist Publication on Art and Politics from 1977 to 1992), Political Art Documentation/Distribution, and Artists Call Against US Intervention in Central America. She's also been a visiting lecturer at the School of Visual Arts in New York, Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, the University of Queensland in Australia, and the University of Colorado Boulder.
