Lucianne Walkowicz looks for clues to the inner workings of the stars' hearts in their incomprehensible expressions. She first became interested in astronomy while a student at Johns Hopkins University, where she was testing detectors for the Hubble Space Telescope's new camera (installed in 2002).
She also developed a fondness for our galaxy's dark star dwellers, the red dwarfs, which became the subject of her Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Washington. She now works on NASA's Kepler project, where she studies starspots and stellar outbursts in order to better understand stellar magnetic fields.
