About Luc Besson
Luc Besson Biography
Because Luc Besson rarely addresses his personal life in interviews, little is known about his personal life. His parents were both scuba diving instructors when he was born in Paris. This had a significant impact on Besson's youth, and he aspired to be a marine scientist until he was 17 years old, when he suffered a diving accident that rendered him unable to dive. He has now made a complete recovery. Besson had incredible inventiveness throughout his youth and teens. He began writing stories out of boredom, including the setting for what would eventually become one of his most successful films, The Fifth Element. Besson returned to his homeland of Paris at the age of 18, unable to dive. He began to get engaged in the film industry there, taking on odd tasks to gain a feel for the business. After that, he traveled to the United States for three years before returning to create Les Films du Loup, his own production business. Les Films du Dauphin was later added to the name. Besson met Eric Serra in the early 1980s and requested him to provide the soundtrack for his first short film, L'Avant dernier. He was also in charge of the commercial film for Paris' candidacy for the 2012 Summer Olympics, which was shown to IOC members. On December 14, 1997, Besson married Milla Jovovich, but the couple divorced in 1999. Besson married Virginie Silla on August 28, 2004. Besson's impact on other directors, artists, and global popular culture cannot be ignored, thanks in large part to his early 1990s films such as Nikita (1990), starring Anne Parillaud, and Léon (The Professional, 1994), starring Jean Reno and bringing Natalie Portman to the cinema. These two films influenced many artists in comic books, other films with cleaner hit-man characters, and several American television shows, the most direct of which was the long-running (1997-2001) USA network TV series La Femme Nikita, as well as influences on ABC's Alias (TV series) starring Jennifer Garner. This impact may be seen in Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran's development of FOX TV's 24 (television), who had previously created Nikita for the USA network. Besson is also credited with inventing the role of the cleaner, and ultra-professional assassin, in popular movies. In the Americanized version of Nikita starring Bridget Fonda, Point of No Return (1993), and Pulp Fiction (1995), Harvey Keitel portrayed cleaners (1994). In 1994, The Cleaner (The X-Files) introduced this character to television, and by 2006, The Cleaner (film) starring Cedric The Entertainer satirized him. A cleaner was depicted among the non-official Mossad squad in Steven Spielberg's 2006 film Munich.
