The Lovin' Spoonful, like other folk-rockers, were more pop and rock than folk, but it didn't detract from their music in the least. The Spoonful demonstrated a kind of shamelessly lyrical, joyful, and good-time music that rivaled the Byrds and even the Mamas & the Papas, yet their finest single, Summer in the City, was uncommonly riff-driven and hard-driving.
