Carl Duva, Lou's 23-year-old brother, introduced him to boxing when he was just ten years old. Lou honed his talents and, by the age of 12, he was an amateur and a ballroom brawler.
Lou had little success as a boxer, which might have been owing to the fact that he hardly had time to train due to his need to go out on the street and perform a variety of tasks to aid the Duva's economy. Lou went to the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938 to see if he might join.
