Laurence Winston and Ruth Winston-Fox raised Winston in London. His mother served as mayor of Southgate, which was merged into the London Borough of Enfield in 1961. He received his medical degree from The London Hospital Medical College, London University, in 1964, and rose to fame in the media as a human reproductive specialist.
He invented tubal microsurgery and many reproductive surgery procedures, including sterilization reversal, and was one of the pioneers of in vitro fertilization. After starting as a registrar at Hammersmith Hospital in 1970, he was awarded a Wellcome Research Fellowship and subsequently promoted to Associate Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven in 1975.
