Lord Robert Winston Biography

Laurence Winston and Ruth Winston-Fox raised Winston in London. His mother served as mayor of Southgate, which was merged into the London Borough of Enfield in 1961. He received his medical degree from The London Hospital Medical College, London University, in 1964, and rose to fame in the media as a human reproductive specialist. He invented tubal microsurgery and many reproductive surgery procedures, including sterilization reversal, and was one of the pioneers of in vitro fertilization. After starting as a registrar at Hammersmith Hospital in 1970, he was awarded a Wellcome Research Fellowship and subsequently promoted to Associate Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven in 1975. In 1977, he became a consultant and Reader at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. Until 1997, he was the head of the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, which was absorbed into Imperial College. Winston headed the team that pioneered preimplantation genetic diagnosis, which detects problems in human embryos, as a Professor of Fertility Studies at Hammersmith. From 2004 to 2005, he served as president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. He is now exploring male germ cell stem cells and genetic modification strategies for them. He has almost 300 peer-reviewed scientific articles to his credit.
