Since 1980, when he joined The Washington Post as its Warsaw correspondent, Michael Dobbs has worked as a reporter for the publication. In August 1980, he was the first western journalist to visit the Gdansk shipyard. He covered the fall of communism for much of his career as a foreign journalist.

He has worked for the Washington Post as a State Department correspondent and a foreign investigative reporter in Washington. Down with Big Brother: The Fall of the Soviet Empire, his nonfiction book, was a runner-up for the PEN Award for Nonfiction in 1997. He currently resides in Bethesda, Maryland.
