About Linden MacIntyre

Linden MacIntyre Biography

Linden MacIntyre is a Canadian journalist, broadcaster, and author who was born on May 29, 1943. He has received eight Gemini Prizes, an International Emmy, and several other awards for writing and journalism, including the Scotiabank Giller Prize for his novel The Bishop's Man, which he published in 2009. He was well-known for his stories on CBC's The Fifth Estate for many years, however, he announced his retirement from the show in 2014 at the age of 70. He was reared in Port Hastings, Nova Scotia, as one of three children of Dan Rory MacIntyre and Alice Donohue. His father was rarely at home because he worked as a miner. The elderly guy decided the family would stay in the village, and he would move elsewhere and stay as long as he could, according to MacIntyre. My mother was a teacher, and she raised my sister and me.” After high school, MacIntyre went to Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where he graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964. In Halifax, he also attended St. Mary's University and the University of King's College. He served as a legislative correspondent in Ottawa for the Halifax Herald from 1964 to 1967. From 1967 to 1970, he worked at the Financial Times of Canada in the same capacity. After his father died in 1970, he was pulled back to Cape Breton, where he stayed for the next six years and worked as a correspondent for the Chronicle Herald. In 1976, he joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Halifax, where he anchored The MacIntyre File, a regional current affairs show for three years. With the use of this software, he was able to win a court battle in Nova Scotia's Supreme Court over access to affidavits and documents related to search warrants. The winning suit, which was later heard before the Supreme Court of Canada, was a historic case that established a precedent in favor of public and media access to information in Canada. MacIntyre went to Toronto in 1980 to work as a producer and journalist for the CBC's new flagship news show, The Journal, where he currently lives. This job brought him all over the world, providing documentary reports on international issues for films like Dirty Sky and Dying Water (about acid rain). He was the host and national editor of CBC Radio's flagship show, Sunday Morning, from 1986 until 1988. He was chosen co-host of the weekly analytical news magazine the fifth estate in 1990, a position he held until 2014. He's also been a frequent guest host on CBC Radio One's The Current. In 2014, MacIntyre chose to resign in order to save at least one younger colleague from the CBC's impending 657 job losses and to demonstrate the impact of the CBC's significant financial cuts.
