Johnson worked for the US Postal Service before getting into poker. Johnson began playing poker in 1974 and won the $1,500 seven-card razz event at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 1997. She also starred in the comedy series Poker Royale: Comedians versus Pros. Her total live tournament victories have surpassed $150,000 as of 2005.
Johnson spends most of her current poker time online, about 25-30 hours each week. Because of her long history with the game, Johnson is recognized as The First Lady of Poker.
