Linda Bilmes Biography

Professor Linda J Bilmes teaches budgeting, applied budgeting, and public finance at the Harvard Kennedy School on a full-time basis. The Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government, the Taubman Center for State and Local Government, and the Rappaport Center for Greater Boston all have her as a faculty affiliate. Bilmes leads teams of student volunteers that work in the communities at Harvard, where he conducts an innovative initiative to aid local cities and villages with their financial health. She also leads budgeting courses for freshly elected mayors and members of Congress at the Harvard Institute of Politics. Bilmes is widely regarded as one of the foremost authorities on budgeting and public finance in the United States. She has held senior government positions such as Assistant Secretary and Chief Financial Officer of the United States Department of Commerce, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Administration, and US Representative to a number of high-ranking commissions, including a Treasury Department commission to examine the Inter-American Investment Corporation's viability. She is now sitting on the National Park System Advisory Board for a four-year term. Bilmes is the co-author (with Joseph Stiglitz) of the New York Times bestseller The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict (Norton) and The People Factor: Strengthening America by Investing in Public Service (with Scott W. Gould) (Brookings). She has contributed to the New York Times, Washington Post, Financial Times, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, Atlantic Monthly, Foreign Policy, Harpers, and the Milken Review, among other publications, on financial and fiscal problems. She's testified in front of Congress on a variety of issues, including veterans' benefits, public service, and the cost of the Iraq War. The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, CNN's "World News Tonight," "In the Money," the "Lou Dobbs Show," the CBS Evening News, "Democracy Now," NPR's "Fresh Air," "All Things Considered," "Here and Now," and "On Point" have all featured Bilmes. "No End In Sight," a documentary film about Iraq directed by Charles Ferguson, features her. Bilmes is a Council on Foreign Relations member. She formerly worked for The Boston Consulting Group for ten years as a management consultant, advising big businesses and governments on strategy and financial management. The American Friends Service Committee awarded her the "Speaking Truth to Power" Award in 2008. Bilmes graduated from Harvard University with a BA and an MBA.
