The song became viral and was broadcast all over the world. “It was disconcerting at first when individuals wrote to me saying, ‘This is the song I want to be played at my funeral,' but it felt nice to know that my music resonates with people,” she adds. Her song "Ashes Like Snow" returned on the stage almost a year later with a similar effect, engulfing the audience in the meandering piano and her soaring arcing voice. It had been over 10 years in the making, a song born of chance. “One day, when visiting my parents, I came across this poem that I had written right around the time of the September 11 attacks, when I was a small kid,” she recalls. I took parts of those lines and added the viewpoint of where we are now, looking back after a long period of conflict and struggle.” Kershaw is a compulsive creative who scribbles tunes and lyrics as she goes about her daily routine. She surreptitiously hums a song into a voice recorder when out at performances or sings melodies into her phone while stuck in traffic, catching any inspiration she can feedback into her music. Her debut album saunters between seductive somberness and joyful uplifting choruses, layering rich music over the stark bones of her sketches.
