About Lilly Hiatt

Lilly Hiatt Biography

Hiatt's compositions combine breathtaking lyrical beauty with equal proportions of edge (“3 Days”) and intensity (“Big Bad Wolf”). The cheerful Let Down by the Nashville resident is clear proof. Hiatt's flawless debut bolsters earthy ("Master") and ethereal ("Oh Mister") tales with narration as incisive as a seasoned lyricist ("Young Black Rose"). The trip is guided by youthful restlessness. The 28-year-old reveals, "There was a self-loathing thread across all those songs, hence the title." “It had a lot to do with the fact that I was in my early twenties and going through this shift from child to adult. It's like going through puberty all over again.” She explains, “John Prine is always a fantastic place to go for creative inspiration.” “I enjoy early Liz Phair, Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Neil Young, and Pearl Jam, and I'm fascinated with Pearl Jam.” As a result, the fast-rising songwriter's new album soars with wild variety. Hiatt effortlessly transitions from country-folk (“Championship Fighter”) to snarling Crazy Horse rock and roll (“Angry Momma”), implying that all songs belong to a single, uncompromising genre: music. “When people ask what I play, I typically reply ‘spacey country,' but the lyrics and the band component are equally essential to me,” she adds. To me, it's basically singer-songwriter material with a strong focus on the band. I suppose I'd categorize it as indie, Americana, or country, although I'm a huge rock and roll lover. That's what I'm aiming towards in the end.” In any case, Hiatt's never-ending lyrical and musical seeking is evident throughout Let Down. Rewind “I had a feeling you were coming.” Increase the volume now. Words are drowned out by tears that are both terrible and pure. On the flawlessly round coming-of-age confessional, she sings, "And I felt like a lady, working and trying to fill up the voids that come with someone dying," a song written as bluntly as Lucinda Williams and sung as sweetly as Patty Griffin. Trying to be positive in the face of adversity. Sounds like an Americana songwriting legend we're all familiar with, whose calm occasionally "turns to country gravel," as Lilly sings. John Hiatt was his name. Lilly has a close relationship with her father. “One of my major influences is undoubtedly my father,” she adds. “I hold him in high regard. I get inspiration from his songs. He's always been and always will be my hero, and he's a great source of guidance. He used to be more kind to me when I was younger, but now he just tells it like it is. He is not afraid to provide constructive feedback. He's really encouraging and kind, and he genuinely cares about my success.” On the new album, her father's irascible wisdom ("People Don't Change") surfaces regularly. Indeed, the compilation unmistakably demonstrates that she is a capable songwriter in her own right. After all, Lilly has spent more than half of her life creating unique music (since age twelve). Let Down is just her first explicit assertion of personal autonomy and purpose. “You can hear a young musician finding herself in Lilly,” adds album producer Doug Lancio (Patty Griffin, Todd Snider, Jack Ingram). “She also has a great sense of humor, listens intently, and pulls from a wide range of musical influences to create a unique and distinctive style.” She's eager to share her news with the rest of the world. Lilly adds, "I finished this record almost a year ago." “It has such a strong emotional attachment for me. I'd never created an entire album before, so I was really involved in the process. I just want to get on the road. I'd be happy if I could make a livelihood, even if it meant living in a little place. I want to perform live performances and share the album with anybody who is interested in hearing it. I've been working in a coffee shop for six years, which is OK, but I grow bored and want to move out.”
