My family and I relocated to a new area in May 2005. It's a city suburb where I was born and raised, but I'd never been there before. Strange and weird things happened during the next 10 years, not only in that house but all around us. The abundance of road kill - dead animals - was one thing that struck me. It appeared to be everywhere, and it wasn't just dead animals on the road; it was dead animals whose guts were thrown behind the mangled carcasses like party gifts. Vultures surrounded the carcasses and peered down from the tree-lined, meandering rural roads, giving the scene an ominous, dark atmosphere. When I began investigating the region, I was astounded by the terrible history that surrounds it, including my own neighborhood, which had a strange and twisted recurrent motif - death. I was telling an actor/movie director friend of mine about the community and all the weird things that had happened there, as well as recalling some of the strange occurrences that had happened to myself and my family since acquiring the property, one night. People moved out throughout the 10 years we were there, or their homes were foreclosed on, or they simply departed. For years, the properties lay empty, with no one ever moving back in. It would make a wonderful horror story, I told my friend. That dialogue stayed with me and took on a life of its own. It expanded and grew, so I started writing it down - in the form of tiny bits, meant to be bite-sized audio theatre pieces. I had finished the third screenplay and was so terrified (I was still living in that house) that I decided to put the series on hold for roughly six months. I sat back down and started my work after eventually leaving that location, feeling stronger and more comfortable! I knew exactly who I wanted to play Lisa Sheraton: experienced actress Dahjn Maria Gomez (pronounced Don). I was also convinced I wanted Siara Tyr, a writer, and actress, to play Lisa's daughter, Brittany. I hired a sound engineer once both artists agreed, and The Burbs was formed. My goal was to write six episodes every season, each of which would be no more than 10 minutes long. There isn't anymore, and there isn't any less. I recognized that people are busy and don't always have an hour to sit and listen to a full podcast. As a result, I wanted them to be content-rich but manageable. I agreed to write three seasons and would then assess the production's direction before deciding whether or not to continue. Wow. If only I'd known! We have had an incredibly successful first two seasons, with enormous success and development. The Burbs currently boasts a cast of fourteen, which is a delectable mix of seasoned, professional performers, voice actors, and newcomers to the industry. They are a collection of really brilliant artists that are committed, loyal, and hardworking. The Burbs takes a two-week break between seasons, during which we offer unique audio theatre shows. We plan to boost programming and production in the first quarter, bringing The Carmen Group closer to my ambition of being a fully operating audio theatre and horror network.
