Though most people know him as an environmental scientist, Lian Pin Koh is a persistent tinker and science fiction movie fanatic. His ambitions to combine these passions led him to co-found ConservationDrones.org with colleague Serge Wich, a project committed to gathering information on forests and animals using low-cost unmanned flying vehicles.
Ground surveys are expensive, and they aren't done frequently enough. Furthermore, the biodiversity of certain isolated tropical forests has never been properly assessed. In Sumatra, Congo, Gabon, and Madagascar, Lian's robots have already returned with vital information. He works at the ETH Zurich as an assistant professor of applied ecology and conservation.
