In 2011, Leymah Gbowee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her role in establishing a women's peace movement that ended the Liberian Civil War in 2003. Gbowee was awarded the prize alongside Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a Liberian, and Tawakkol Karman, a Yemeni.
Gbowee and Sirleaf are the second and third African women to win the Nobel Peace Prize, following Kenya's late Wangari Maathai.
