The Early Tapes, a compilation of demos from 1980, were published shortly after, therefore this is their first album and Level 42 is their second. Before image consultants, sponsors, and major stage shows, there were no image consultants, sponsors, or large stage shows. In 1981/82, a level 42 show meant muscle shirts, sweatpants, and shoes.
First and foremost, it meant MUSIC. At the time, Phil Gould was the drummer, and he supplied a smooth, fast jazz-funk rhythm. Rowland Gould, on guitar, added a rock edge to his solos and a funky groove to his grooves with his delicate rythm work.
