Leslie Segrete discovered her artistic talent at the age of four when her mother taught her how to sew. Instead of lemonade, she started selling crafts outside at the age of eight. She realized it was correct for her after her architect father demonstrated that she could make a career with her skills.
She earned a bachelor's degree in drama from Hofstra University in 1997, with a focus on scenic design and a minor in anthropology, and a master's degree in culinary arts from the French Culinary Institute in 2000. She was even nominated for best student scene design at the ACTF (American College Theatre Festival).
