Abrahamson was offered a grant to read for a Ph.D. in Philosophy at Stanford University. He didn't finish this be that as it may and came back to Ireland to take up filmmaking at first coordinating plugs shooting a well known arrangement of adverts for Carlsberg.
Abrahamson's first film was Adam and Paul a dark satire that highlighted a couple of heroin addicts as they advanced around Dublin looking for a fix. The subsequent film to this was 2007's Garage featuring Pat Shortt as a forlorn gas station chaperon in provincial Ireland. The two movies won the IFTA grant for the best film.
