Lee Unkrich Biography

He has been dubbed "one of the finest geniuses to ever work in the medium" by John Lasseter. His staging, editing, and camera direction, as well as his understanding of the mechanics of cinema, are amazing. We've all learned a lot from Lee, and he's helped us take our films to new heights. He owes a huge debt of gratitude to Pixar's cinematic aesthetic. Unkrich worked as an editor and director in television for several years before joining Pixar in 1994. In 1991, he graduated from the famous film school at the University of Southern California, where he produced many award-winning short films. Unkrich was up in Cleveland, Ohio, and spent his childhood acting at the Cleveland Playhouse. After dabbling in acting throughout his adolescence, Lee immediately decided that he was more suited to a career behind the camera, and in 1990 enrolled in the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. Unkrich made his movie co-directing debut with the Golden Globe-winning Disney/Pixar picture Toy Story 2 in 1999 and then went on to co-direct Monsters, Inc. in 2000. Prior to those films, he worked with Lasseter on Toy Story and A Bug's Life as a film editor. He was an excellent French student, and in his film Toy Story 2, he based a character on his high school French instructor. For Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo, he was featured in the local paper twice. He won an Academy Award for his directorial debut, Toy Story 3, in 2011, and is now working on his next Pixar film, Coco.
