Subsequent to moving on from the American Theater and Dramatic Academy in 1985 Lee did a great deal of stage work in New York City. Notwithstanding, from 1986-89 he essentially worked at the Empire Diner. That is the place he met Tom Fontana (the honor winning maker and author whose work incorporates Oz Homicide: Life on the Street and St. Somewhere else) who lived around the bend from the cafe. In 1990, Lee went with Fontana to Los Angeles to enable him to move.
