Lee DeWyze Biography

On June 22, 2009, DeWyze auditioned for the ninth season of American Idol at the United Center in Chicago after Vincent Ferrara, a friend of his who was also trying out for the contest in Chicago, encouraged him to give it a shot. His song choice for the audition was Ain't No Sunshine. He made it through to Hollywood week as one of only 13 people from Chicago which was the lowest number recorded out of all the 7 audition cities. He made Top 5 with members of his group during Hollywood week which included Crystal Bowersox and Aaron Kelly. DeWyze made it to Top 2 with Crystal Bowersox and eventually emerged winner. Among the competitors, Andrew Garcia is his closest friend. Throughout the season, Garcia was his roommate till he eliminated in the Top 9 and had to leave the show. Lee’s other close friends who made up the Top 10 idols were Lacey Brown from Top 16, Alex Lambert, Siobhan Magnus, Aaron Kelly, Katie Stevens and Michael Lynche. DeWyze would call his family before every performance. In Season 9, DeWyze was one of two contestants who never made bottom three and Crystal Bowersox was the other contestant. He was praised by the Judges for singing with confidence and letting go of his shy persona throughout the season and they also encouraged him to win. With more than 41,000 people in attendance as part of his American Idol Homecoming day, DeWyze performed at the Arlington Park Race Track in Arlington Heights, Illinois on May 14, 2010. He had a parade in Mount Prospect along with his performance at the race track, threw out the opening pitch at a Chicago Cubs baseball game and performed at a local AT&T store.
