Laura Poitras Biography

Before making documentaries, Laura Poitras worked as a professional chef. A trilogy of films centered on America post 9/11 attacks is what Laura is currently working on. The first film which follows an Iraqi doctor in Baghdad is called My Country, My Country (2006); The second film, set in Guantanamo and Yemen tells the story of Salim Hamdan, a prisoner at Guantanamo facing war crime charges and also the story of Osama bin Laden’s former bodyguard titled The Oath (2010). The final film will focus on domestic surveillance and will be set in the U.S. The film My Country, My Country was nominated for many awards such as Emmy Award, Independent Spirit Award and an Academy Award. The film The Oath also received many awards. Like the Cinematography award at Special Jury prizes at Hot Docs and Full Frame, Sundance, the True Vision Award at True/False, and the Grand Jury award at Edinburgh Film Festival. A film she made with Linda Goode Bryant titled Flag Wars (2003) was nominated for both an Independent Spirit Award and an Emmy Award. She also received a Peabody Award. Other awards Laura has received are: a Media Arts Fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation and Tribeca Film Institute and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2007-2008). She took part in the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Story and Edit Lab as a creative advisor (2007, 2008, 2010) and as a Fellow (2005, 2009). At Yale University, she teaches documentary filmmaking. She resides in New York City.
