Innes was conceived on August 16 1959 in Pontiac MI. She was brought up in Birmingham with her folks Laurette and Robert and five more established kin. When Innes was growing up her dad a school English teacher demanded that the family go to the proclaimed Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario Canada.

Innes developed increasingly more keen on acting with every presentation. In 1977, she moved on from Birmingham Seaholm High School and with her dad's consolation to follow her heart joined up with Northwestern University's theater expressions program. In 1978, while still in school Innes made her film debut in Brian De Palma's The Fury with Kirk Douglas and John Cassavetes.
