During the 1970s Larry Ellison worked for the Ampex Corporation where one of his undertakings for the CIA was a database that he named Oracle. Ellison was enlivened by a paper called A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks composed by Edgar F. Codd about social database frameworks.

Ellison established Oracle in 1977 providing $2000 of his own cash under the name Software Development Laboratories. In 1979, the organization was renamed Relational Software Inc. It was later renamed Oracle after the organization's leader item Ellison's Oracle database.
