Larry Beasley Biography

Larry Beasley was the City of Vancouver's retiring Director of Planning. He is currently the University of British Columbia's "Distinguished Practice Professor of Planning" and the founder and principal of Beasley and Associates, a worldwide planning firm. Mr. Beasley established land use and transit plans, as well as cautious development management, over his thirty years of public service, which have significantly changed Vancouver's inner core. He also oversaw neighborhood revitalization, a robust historical preservation program, the City's urban design studio, and a successful civic fundraising campaign. He was a key decision-maker for Vancouver's development approvals throughout the last thirteen years of his civic career. He currently works with the business sector and governments all around the world, teaching and advising them. He chairs the National Capital Commission's 'National Advisory Committee on Planning, Design, and Realty,' is the Chief Advisor on Urban Design for the City of Dallas, Texas, is a member of Rotterdam's International Economic Development Advisory Board, and is the Special Advisor on City Planning to the government of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. He was also vice president of Aquilini Development for three years before joining Concord Pacific Developments as Senior Development Advisor. Mr. Beasley holds a bachelor's degree in geography and political science (B.A.) as well as a master's degree in planning (M.A.). From Simon Fraser University and Dalhousie University, he received two Honorary Doctorate Degrees (Hon. L.L.D.). He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners, an Honorary Member of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, and a Royal Architectural Institute of Canada "Advocate for Architecture." He is also a Fellow of the Dallas Institute and a member of the Canadian Urban Institute's Board of Directors. The Kevin Lynch Prize, the most prestigious honor in American planning, was bestowed to him by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2007. Mr. Beasley has been awarded the Order of Canada, which is the country's highest honor for lifetime accomplishment.
