Larry Alford II Biography

Larry Alford's journey is nothing short of miraculous. Larry's passion for golf dates back to his childhood, and he always knew it would play a significant role in his future. He worked hard to perfect his game, but tragically, in August of 1991, he was involved in an automobile accident that nearly killed him. In fact, Larry lost his left arm as a result of it. Even this could not dampen his desire to become a professional tour player. Larry was quickly becoming one of the most effective junior golfers in the country prior to the accident. His championship results ranked him sixteenth on the American Junior Golf Association's national list. Larry was tied with Tiger Woods down to the final round of the Dinah Shore/Mission Hills Tournament in California in June 1991. Tiger took the lead in the final few holes and went on to win. Larry went on to win numerous Houston area events, and just a few days before his accident, he accomplished one of his goals by winning the prestigious Houston Golf Association Championship of Champions. Larry was severely injured, suffering from a broken back, collapsed lung, blood clots in his right arm that nearly necessitated a double surgery, total destruction of facial structure, as well as major head traumatic injury. After having to spend over a month in ICU and two months in brain rehabilitation, this determined golfer has proven to be only a minor setback. His stepfather designed a golf prosthesis, the only one of its kind in the world, which allowed him to resume playing. Despite the arduous surgeries and rehabilitative services, Larry's patience, persistence, and positive attitude have allowed him to triumph both on and off the golf course. Larry was named Junior Player of the Year by the Southern Texas PGA in 1992. Mr. Johnny Miller hosted a benefit golf tournament the same year to raise funds for Larry's medical bills and golf prosthesis. Larry has turned to charity competitions to inspire others, with the help of family, friends, and many PGA Tour players. Larry has taken part in over 200 charity tournaments and has raised over $3 million for local and national charities.
