Lael Brainard is the Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs in President Barack Obama's cabinet. From 2001 to 2009, she was a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and from June 2006 to March 16, 2009, she was vice president and director of the Global Economy and Development program.
On April 20, 2010, the United States Senate confirmed Brainard to her present position. Before the collapse of the Berlin Wall, Brainard grew up as a US expatriate in Communist Poland and Germany. She graduated from the George School, a boarding school in Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1979.
