Lady A Biography

Lady A, formerly Lady Antebellum, is a country music band from Nashville, Tennessee, founded in 2006. Hillary Scott (lead and background vocals), Charles Kelley (lead and background vocals, guitar), and Dave Haywood make up the band (background vocals, guitar, piano, mandolin). Kelley is the brother of pop artist Josh Kelley, while Scott is the daughter of country music singer Linda Davis. Before signing to Capitol Nashville, the trio made their debut as guest vocalists on Jim Brickman's single Never Alone in 2007. Lady Antebellum has six Capitol albums: Lady Antebellum, Need You Now, Own the Night, Golden, 747, Heart Break, and Ocean, as well as a Christmas album (On This Winter's Night). The Recording Industry Association of America has recognized the first three albums as platinum or higher (RIAA). The albums have spawned sixteen songs, nine of which have hit #1 on the Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts. Need You Now, which lasted five weeks at #1 in 2009, and 2011's Just a Kiss both achieved #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts, is the longest-running #1 single. In 2008, the Academy of Country Music named Lady A as Top New Duo or Group, and the Country Music Association named her New Artist of the Year. Lady A continued to win honors, with I Run to You earning their first Grammy Award in 2009. Lady A received three Grammy Awards in 2010: Record of the Year, Best Country Album, and Best Country Duo or Group with Vocals. Own the Night, their 2011 album, was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Country Album. During the George Floyd protests in June 2020, the band abbreviated their name to Lady A in an attempt to distance themselves from the name's associations with slavery and the Antebellum South, resulting in a feud with Black gospel singer Anita White, who had been using the same name for more than 20 years.
