Dr. Kwane Stewart, known as "The Street Vet," is a veterinarian and Founder of Project Street Vet, a nonprofit that provides free veterinary care to pets of unhoused individuals. Born in New Mexico and raised in California, Stewart's passion for animals began in childhood, inspired by films like "The Black Stallion" and his pets. After graduating from Colorado State University's veterinary program in 1997, he worked in private practice in San Diego before joining a municipal shelter in California's Central Valley.
In 2011, a transformative encounter outside a convenience store, where Stewart treated a homeless man's dog for fleas, sparked his mission. Seeing the profound bond between unhoused pet owners and their animals, he offered free care on California's streets, initially funding treatments himself. In 2020, he founded Project Street Vet, which operates in cities like San Diego, Los Angeles, Orlando, and Atlanta, providing vaccinations, supplies, and complex treatments for over 1,600 pets since 2021. Stewart's "no judgment" approach highlights the deep human-animal connection, with owners often prioritizing their pets' needs.
