Kirk Shelmerdine Biography

Kirk Shelmerdine joined Richard Childress Racing in 1982 as Dale Earnhardt's crew chief. Earnhardt won 46 races, finished 142 times in the top five, and finished 246 times in the top ten on his way to four championships with Kirk. Over the next eight years, the pit crew won four straight Pit Crew Championships. Shelmerdine holds the record for being the youngest crew chief to win a NASCAR race, as well as the youngest crew chief to win a Winston Cup championship. He announced his retirement from his crew chief duties in 1992 and set out on his own to pursue his ambition of becoming a driver.
