In his 1397 career starts, he mostly played third base and first base, though he did play 10 games in the outfield, 39 games as the designated hitter, and 27 games at second base and shortstop combined. He was a member of the Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles, and Detroit Tigers, among other teams. In 1979, he replaced Pete Rose at third base, and in 1986, he was a member of the World Champion Mets.
