My current research focuses on three major areas: (1) social influences on individuals' aggressive attitudes and behaviours; (2) person-centered approaches to analysing longitudinal data on violence and victimisation; and (3) investigating the relationship between substance use and violence. My first area of study began with a conceptual application of the literatures on social influence, social networks, and attitudes to the study of violence and aggression. The overarching goal of this research area is to integrate psychological and sociological principles and methods in order to better situate violence within a social and structural context. My second research interest stems from my fascination with novel statistical analyses and methodologies. Person-centered analyses, such as group and latent class analysis and growth mixture models, use individual covariation to group them into meaningful segments. This method enables analysts to find constructive subgroups of individuals within their samples. I used these techniques to model longitudinal data on violence and victimisation and discovered several intriguing patterns. The findings of this line of research have the potential to alter how researchers think about how violence and victimisation develop over time. My third area of study is the relationship between substance use and male-to-female aggression. Longitudinal growth modelling with time-varying alcohol or drug use as predictors of physical and sexual aggression has been used in projects in this area, using both multilevel modelling and structural equation modelling approaches.
