Kent Beck is a software engineer and the inventor of extreme programming, as well as one of the 17 founding signatories of the Agile Manifesto, the foundational document for agile software development. Test-Driven Development (TDD), of which Beck is a major proponent, is strongly connected with extreme and agile methodologies.
Extreme programming is a software development technique that favors a collaborative and iterative design process above rigid formal specifications. Beck was a pioneer in both software design concepts and the commercial use of Smalltalk. Beck co-wrote the SUnit unit testing framework for Smalltalk, which produced the xUnit series of frameworks, including JUnit for Java.
