About Ken Howard
Ken Howard Biography
Ken Howard stars in "Crossing Jordan" as a worldly ex-cop, but he is perhaps best known for his memorable performance as a street-savvy teacher in the classic drama "The White Shadow" – a role he "re-created" in real life as a master class teacher at the American Repertory Theatre Institute, as well as an instructor at Harvard University and Harvard Law School. The Tony Award-winning Howard ("Child's Play") taught an acting master class at the American Repertory Theatre Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as well as an undergraduate lecture course at Harvard and an oral argument course at Harvard Law School. Howard, a native of Manhasset, New York (a New York City suburb), was captain of the Amherst College basketball team and an aspiring performer who was encouraged by the theatre department's head to apply to the Yale School of Drama before receiving his bachelor's degree. In 1968, he accepted a small role on Broadway in Neil Simon's "Promises, Promises," two years into his three-year programme at Yale. He went on to play Thomas Jefferson in the Tony-winning musical "1776," for which he won a Theatre World award. He later won a Tony Award for his performance in "Child's Play" as a young gym coach at a Catholic boys school, and he has appeared on Broadway in "Seesaw," "The Norman Conquests," "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue," and the national tour of "Equus." In 1970, Howard received even more attention for his feature-film debut, "Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon," in which he co-starred with Liza Minnelli. Later in the decade, he appeared in the TV series "Adam's Rib" and "The Manhunter," but by the late 1970s, he was firmly established in the public's mind as Coach Reeves on "The White Shadow," a series based on his own expertise as the only white player on his high school basketball team. In the years that followed, he was a regular cast member on the shows "It's Not Easy," "The Colbys," and "Dynasty",Howard's other television credits include "Perfect Murder, Perfect Town," "The Thorn Birds," "Rage of Angels," "Op Center," "Mastergate," and "Memories of Midnight." "Damien, the Leper Priest," "Victims," "He's Not Your Son," "The Country Girl," and "Murder in New Hampshire" are among his television films. In addition to "1776" (in which he reprised his stage role), he has appeared in "Such Good Friends," "Clear and Present Danger," "The Net," and "At First Sight." He has narrated over 30 best-selling audiobooks, and he won an Emmy for on-camera narration for "Facts for Boys: "The Human Body."Howard is at ease with his retired Boston cop persona, which he describes as "smart, eccentric, intuitive, and lovable." "I've spent so many years of my life in Massachusetts – at Amherst, the Williamstown Theatre, and at Harvard – and I've always been fond of the people in that area," he adds. His wife, stuntwoman Linda Howard, and their dog, Shadow, live in Los Angeles, California. The 28th of March is his birthday.
