About Keller Williams
Keller Williams Biography
Keller Williams (born February 4, 1970) is a Fredericksburg, Virginia-based musician who started playing in the early 1990s. Williams' music incorporates bluegrass, folk, alternative rock, reggae, electronica/dance, jazz, funk, and other styles. Due to his frequent usage of live phrase looping with numerous instruments, he is often referred to as a one-man jam band. Williams has toured with numerous bands, including Yonder Mountain String Band, The String Cheese Incident, Umphrey's McGee, and Ratdog while being predominantly a solo performer. Williams has a policy of recording his performances and exchanging the recordings for non-commercial purposes. His debut album, "Freek," was published in 1994 on SCI Fidelity Records and featured primarily solo versions of his early tunes. In 1996, “Buzz” was released, which featured guest performances by Gibb Droll, Larry Keel, Noel White, and others. In 1998, he published his third album, "Spun," which featured contributions from Peter Rowan, Henry Mancini, Scott Harris, and Big Country. Williams was a member of The String Cheese Incident when they recorded "Breathe" in 1999. Keller Williams Incident is the name given to the group as a whole. Williams' debut live CD, "Loop," was released in 2001 and featured live recordings from three concerts in the Pacific Northwest in 2000. Tye North, Dave Watts, and a horn section appeared on his 2002 album "Laugh." In 2003, the album "Dance" was released, which featured remixes of songs from "Laugh." “Home” was also released in 2003, and it charted at #39 on the Billboard Independent Albums list and #152 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. The home was inspired by his love for Fredericksburg, Virginia, and included audio snippets from his upbringing throughout the album. In 2005, “Stage,” a two-disc live collection of Williams' 2003 tour, was published. Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, David Bowie & Queen, Van Morrison, Sugar Hill Gang, and Michael Jackson were among the artists covered in the compilation. It was his second album to chart at #39 on the Billboard Independent Albums list in a row. For “Grass,” credited to Keller & The Keels, Williams collaborated with Larry and Jenny Keel, a husband and wife pair. Keller's boyhood buddy Larry Keel performed lead guitar, and Jenny Keel played bass. Covers of Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, the Yonder Mountain String Band, and the Grateful Dead were included on the CD. Williams enlisted the help of a number of musicians for his 2007 album "Dream." Victor Wooton, Bela Fleck, The String Cheese Incident, Steve Kimock, Michael Franti, Charlie Hunter, and Bob Weir were among the many special guests. Williams published “12” in 2007. It included one song from each of his previous 11 albums, as well as one previously unreleased song called “Freshies.” “Rex (Live at the Fillmore),” recorded live on February 8, 2006 at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, Colorado, was released in 2008. Williams, Keith Moseley (of The String Cheese Incident), and Jeff Austin (of Yonder Mountain String Band) performed bluegrass renditions of Grateful Dead songs as part of a collaborative concert. Grateful Grass was the name of the band that played. In 2009, he released “Odd,” and in 2010, he released “Thief,” his second Keller & The Keels album. A compilation of children's songs was recorded and released by Williams. SCI Fidelity released his solo album, "Bass," in 2011. Williams joined The Travelin' McCourys for the album "Pick," which was recorded at Butcher's Shoppe Recording Studio in Nashville in early 2012. Members of the Del McCoury Band, Rob McCoury on banjo, Ronnie McCoury on mandolin, Jason Carter on violin, and Alan Bartram on bass, performed a twelve-song set that included both covers and originals.
