Keith Woods Biography

NPR's Chief Diversity Officer is Keith Woods. He oversees and supports NPR's initiatives to increase diversity in its audience, programming, and personnel, as well as to create an environment where diverse employees may develop and thrive. He serves as a resource for leadership and employees working on diversity initiatives, as well as public radio executives from over 260 member stations around the country. Woods also leads the editorial Training team, which trains journalists in leadership, storytelling, reporting, editing, diversity, audio production, and digital strategy in order to enhance and support their work. He joined NPR in 2010 to head the organization's corporate diversity strategy, and he's been working with the newsroom on a multi-year initiative to diversify sources. From Canton, New York, to Juneau, Alaska, he has taught the staff of over 30 public media stations. Woods was Dean of Faculty at The Poynter Institute, a journalism school in St. Petersburg, Florida, before joining NPR. He oversaw a vibrant faculty and taught courses on racial relations, diversity, ethics, reporting, and personal essay writing for 15 years. He is a co-author of The Authentic Voice: The Best Race and Ethnicity Reporting. Through workshops at dozens of journalism schools, radio stations, newspapers, and television stations throughout the country, Woods has worked to assist professionals, teachers, and students in better understand and address issues of diversity. He led two Pulitzer Prize juries while at Poynter.
