HIV/AIDS had just recently been identified while Keith Hansen was a student at the Woodrow Wilson School. It was not even a big policy concern outside of the public health field, and it was certainly not viewed as a possible danger to world growth. Keith is now a Senior Director, Human Development, Latin America and the Caribbean at the World Bank, where he works on a daily basis in the heart of this global policy issue. The School's unusual combination of politics, economics, organizational studies, psychology, and even philosophy classes gave me a more relevant and long-term education than I had anticipated. My education was centered on providing students with the skills and analytic ability to evaluate any difficulties that may occur throughout the course of their careers. I was struck by the fact that, more than any other school of public policy, WWS graduates tended to go into public service or innovative areas of civil society, such as NGOs, nonprofits, or philanthropy, according to the School's alumni directory listing of typical first-year jobs of graduating students. And, as before, I'm amazed by how the school continues to evolve to meet the needs of the times. I am pleased that the School has given this subject much attention, as seen by the recent introduction of a graduate certificate in health and health policy. This is a great example of how the School creates a policy-relevant curriculum, and it will provide students with both the substantial technical background and the analytical tools they need to work effectively in global health. My stay at WWS was intriguing, rewarding, and enjoyable, and it well exceeded my high expectations. The faculty's depth and breadth of expertise, as well as the range of experiences and energy among my classmates, provided for a strong combination. It's been 19 years since I graduated, and I'm continually struck by how much I value and benefit from my time at the School. One of the reasons I opted to return to WWS and teach is that it allows me to maintain the exposure and spirit of participation in ideas that helped me start my career on the right foot.
