Keith Ellison Biography

The Fifth District, which encompasses Minneapolis and its surrounding suburbs, is one of Minnesota's most dynamic and culturally diverse districts. Rep. Ellison's guiding concept is "generosity and inclusiveness," and his top goals in Congress include supporting peace, achieving environmental sustainability, and expanding civil and human rights. Rep. Ellison's dedication to consumer justice prompted him to draught legislation that became part of the 2009 Credit Cardholders Bill of Rights. This rule prohibits a practice known as "universal default," in which lenders may raise their clients' interest rates if they were late on payments. Rep. Ellison also developed the Protecting Tenants in Foreclosure Act, which compels banks and other new owners to offer at least 90 days' notice of eviction to tenants inhabiting foreclosed properties in response to the foreclosure crisis that began in 2008. The congressman serves on the House Financial Services Committee, which oversees the financial services and housing industries, as well as Wall Street. He is also a member of the House Democratic Steering & Policy Committee, which determines Democratic members' committee assignments and establishes the Democratic Caucus' policy agenda. He formerly served on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. For the 113th Congress, Rep. Ellison was chosen co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, which supports the progressive promise of fairness for everyone. Fighting for economic fairness and security for everyone; safeguarding and preserving our civil rights and civil freedoms; promoting global peace and security; and advancing environmental preservation and energy independence are the basic values of our progressive pledge. He is also a participant of the Congressional Black Caucus, the founder of the Congressional Consumer Justice Caucus, and a member of over a dozen additional caucuses focused on topics ranging from social inclusion to environmental preservation. Rep. Ellison was a well-known community organizer who operated flourishing civil rights, employment, and criminal defense legal business in Minneapolis before being elected to Congress. He was also elected to the Minnesota State House of Representatives for two terms. Keith grew up in the city of Detroit, Michigan. Since receiving his legal degree from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1990, he has lived in Minnesota. Keith is the happy father of four sons and daughters.
