About Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor

Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor Biography

From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation, by Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, earned the Lannan Cultural Freedom Award for an Especially Notable Book in 2016. She's also the editor of How We Get Free: Black Feminism and the Combahee River Collective, which won the Lambda Literary Award in 2018 for LGBQT nonfiction. Her third book, Race for Profit: How Banks and the Real Estate Industry Undermined Black Homeownership, was longlisted for a National Book Award for nonfiction and was released in 2019 by the University of North Carolina Press. After the 1960s urban rebellions, the federal government promoted single-family homeownership in Black neighborhoods, according to a new book. Taylor used the term "predatory inclusion" to describe how the federal government's shift to market-based solutions in low-income housing programs in the 1970s impacted Black communities, welfare recipients, and emerging discourses on the urban "underclass." Taylor is interested in the involvement of private-sector pressures in the 1970s "urban crises," which are often disguised in governmental policy development and implementation. Taylor's work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Review, The Paris Review, The Guardian, The Nation, Jacobin, and Souls: A Critical Journal of Black Politics, Culture, and Society. Taylor is a popular public speaker and author. Root named her one of the top 100 most influential African Americans in the United States in 2016. She has been named a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians, as well as the Charles H. McIlwain University Preceptor at Princeton University for the 2018-2021 academic year. She is a Princeton University Assistant Professor of African American Studies.
