Kathy Mattea joined the bluegrass band Pennsboro in 1976 while a student at West Virginia University and two years later left out to go to Nashville with her partner. She took menial jobs and waited tables while polishing her songwriting skills, and her demo tape got her a deal with Mercury in 1983.
In 1984, she released her self-titled debut, followed by From My Heart the following year. None of the singles from either album broke into the Top 20. Her third album, the folky Walk the Way the Wind Blows, released in 1986, was her critical and financial breakthrough.
