About Katherine W. Phillips
Katherine W. Phillips Biography
Prof. Katherine W. Phillips decided to join the Columbia Business School faculty in the fall of 2011 as the Paul Calello Professor of Leadership and Ethics. She was previously an Associate Professor of Management and Organizations at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, as well as the Co-Director and Founder of Northwestern's Center on the Science of Diversity. She has also served as a Visiting Professor at Stanford Graduate School of Business and as a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Advanced Studies in Behavioral Sciences. Professor Phillips earned her Doctor of philosophy degree in Organizational Behavior from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. Her Bachelor of Science in Psychology is from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prof. Phillips' research focuses on the central questions of what the value of diversity is and what barriers prevent society, organisations, and especially work teams from acquiring the knowledge, perspectives, and unique backgrounds of each member. As organisations and society become more diverse, developing a more sophisticated understanding of intergroup relations and the myriad of processes that obstruct capturing the value that diversity can bring to the table is critical for organisations' continued growth. Professor Phillips' theory and empirical evidence has primarily focused on the effects of diversity on small group processes and performance, but her work has recently expanded to include assessments of worth and status that interact with group composition to influence interpersonal and group outcomes. Professor Phillips' research provides insights into issues such as information sharing, diversity, status, minority influence, decision-making, and performance in work groups. Recent research focuses on the intersection of race and gender stereotypes, the relationship between diversity and moral perceptions, and insights into how homogeneity affects group processes just as much as diversity itself. Professor Phillips has received multiple professional honours, including top awards and recognition from the International Association of Conflict Management, the Academy of Management's Organizational Behavior Division, the Rosabeth Moss Kanter Excellence in Work-Family Research Award, and the Academy of Management's Gender, Diversity, and Organizations Division. Professor Phillips is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Academy of Management, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. Her overview of diversity research, published in Research in Organizational Behavior (under the pen name Williams), is a valuable resource for academics from a variety of fields, including psychologists, sociologists, political scientists, lawyers, and doctors. Her prize wiining work can be found in journals such as Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Organization Science and Organizational Behavior, and Human Decision Processes. Prof. Phillips teaches a variety of subjects, including leadership, team leadership and management, decision making, negotiations, organisational change, and inspiration. Professor Phillips' study has been covered by the Chicago Tribune, Time Magazine.com, Fortune.com, Working Women, The Globe and Mail, and The Mint. Professor Phillips was named one of the Top 40 Business School Professors Under the Age of 40 by Poets and Quants in 2011. According to students, Professor Katherine Phillips has an inclusive teaching style that encourages continuous participation in class. She has a way of students who participate in discussions of cutting-edge concepts from her research and expertise that makes you feel like you're a part of something new and different.
