Katherine Moennig Biography

Katherine Moennig was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 29, 1977. She is an actress and producer who has appeared in films such as Gone (2012), The Lincoln Lawyer (2011), and Everybody's Fine (2011). (2009). She is also recognized for her performances as Shane McCutcheon on The L Word (2004–09), Jake Pratt on Young Americans (2000), and Lena on the Showtime series Ray Donovan, which she has played since 2013. At the age of 18, Moennig traveled to New York City to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Is Anyone Home?, a video by Our Lady Peace, featured her in the lead role in 1999. She also starred in a Fleet Bank ad and a Red Cross campaign supporting Hurricane Katrina victims. Moennig appeared in the 10th annual Ribbon of Hope Celebration and presented at the 17th annual GLAAD Awards. Moennig's first significant role was as Jake Pratt in the television series Young Americans. Shane McCutcheon in The L Word; Rosie's (Drew Barrymore) girlfriend Jilly in Everybody's Fine; Candace, Sophia Myles' lesbian lover in Art School Confidential; and Lena, a press agent who works for Liev Schreiber's character in Ray Donovan are just a few of her lesbian roles. She's also explored transgender parts, auditioning for Brandon Teena in Boys Don't Cry and portraying Cheryl Avery, a young transgender woman on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. In collaboration with Moennig, the Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI) produced the documentary My Address: A Look At Gay Youth Homelessness in 2007. The documentary, directed by Gigi Nicolas, focused on the lives of homeless homosexual adolescents and the work of the HMI. Moennig narrated her debut audiobook, Michael Connelly's The Late Show, in 2017, and she repeated her role as Shane McCutcheon in The L Word: Generation Q in 2019.
