Together with her sister Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne, Katherine Kallinis Berman started the Gesrgetown Cupcake. Alongside their grandmother, the sisters started baking when Berman was three and LaMontagne was four. On their grandfathers birthday, they baked their very first cake. (vanilla cake with a milk chocolate frosting). From their grandmother, they learned how to bake by following her around.
Also by imitating her in the kitchen. Having no formal culinary school training and only armed with their grandmother's recipes Berman and LaMontagne quit their corporate jobs to follow their dream of opening a bakery together. On Valentine's Day 2008, they opened Georgetown Cupcake in Washington D.C. as the city's first and only cupcakery.
