Kate Johnson Biography

Kate Johnson won a silver medal in rowing at the 2004 Olympics. During the preliminary heats of the Athens Olympic Games, she and her teammates set a world record in the women's eight. Johnson is a two-time World Champion, a five-time World Cup winner, and a member of nine senior and junior national teams. Kate returned home from competing in the Junior World Championships in Scotland at the age of 15 (as a novice rower) and wrote in her journal a promise to herself that she would one day compete in the Olympic Games. She went on to receive a full scholarship to the University of Michigan (class of 2001), where she and her teammates established one of the top NCAA women's rowing programmes in the country. Kate was a three-time All-American, two-time Big Ten Rowing Athlete of the Year, two-time U of M Athlete of the Year, and 1998 U of M Freshman of the Year at Michigan, making her the most decorated rower in school history. Kate is a rowing representative on the US Olympic Committee's Athlete Advisory Council and serves as vice-chair. She is an athlete ambassador for Right To Play, an organisation that uses sport and play as a tool for development in the world's most impoverished areas. She travelled to Ethiopia with Right To Play programmes last year and has since spoken about her experiences at the World Urban Forum and the United Nations. Kate recently ran the Portland Marathon to raise funds for Row NY, a New York City inner-city rowing club for girls. She is currently employed by the sport marketing firm IMG (International Management Group) in New York City, where she was in charge of TOP sponsorship for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.
