Karen L. Nyberg Biography

Karen L. Nyberg is a NASA astronaut who also works as a mechanical engineer. During her first mission in 2008, she has become the 50th woman in space and spent 6 months aboard the International Space Station. She was chosen by NASA in 2000 and also has a Bachelor of Science Science in Mechanical Engineering Engineering from the University of North Dakota, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the very same university. She started as a Coop in 1991 and has worked for NASA in a range of aspects, earning a patent for her work on the Robot Friendly Probe and Socket Assembly. Nyberg has completed two space missions, STS124 and Expedition 36/37, totaling 180 days in space. Since then, she has worked in the Space Shuttle division, the Exploration division, and as the Chief of the Robotics branch. Over the course of the two missions, Dr. Nyberg has spent 180 days in space. She has received numerous honours and awards, along with the University of Texas Distinguished Alumnus Prize, NASA JSC Collaborative Education Special Achievement Prize, University of Texas Outstanding Young Engineering Graduate Prize, University of North Dakota Honorary Doctorate of Letters, and others.
